Angela Owens – An Appreciation
DERA joins with our community and beyond in its expression of deepest sympathy and condolences to the daughters of Angela Owens – Carol, Debbie, Audrey and Gillian – and her extended family on the sad passing to the Lord of their beloved mother at Beaumont Hospital on 30th March 2021 following a short illness.
Angela Owens was an exemplary person dedicated to family life and our community for all of 50 years and more. Angela and her husband Sean (RIP 2008) and their children, the daughters mentioned above and deceased sons Derek (2011) and John (2016), played a significant role in the society they lived in here in Donaghmede for the benefit of all.
“Angela’s Green” on Carndonagh Lawn, just opposite her home, was her unique creation and developed by Angela over the years she lived there. This work was recognised by Dublin City Council in the winning of Awards annually for Angela’s contribution to our environment and for creating a place of natural beauty on the green for all to see and enjoy. For more than 20 years and up to the time of her passing Angela was our DERA Treasurer and held this position with distinction. Angela also helped to organise our annual DERA Summer Festival (revived in 2008) and pioneered our now very popular Senior Citizens Day Out, enjoyed by 190 in 2019. All that Angela accomplished was done in a quiet and unassuming manner for the benefit of so many.
Now we ask and pray the Good Lord will grant Angela eternal rest in his heavenly peace free of our earthly trials and tribulations and in thanksgiving for Angela’s life and times.
Again we offer on behalf of DERA and our Donaghmede Community our deepest sympathy to Angela’s family and relatives.
Sincerely,
Bernard C. Byrne
Chairperson, DERA
Golden Jubilee 2021
DERA will celebrate its Golden Jubilee in 2021, having been formed as the Donaghmede Community Development Association (DCDA) in 1971.
It is hoped that a full programme of events, including a Summer Festival, can be staged: further details will be available from February 2021. Volunteers and sponsorship will be warmly welcomed!
October 2020 Update
We are pleased to report that An Garda Síochána have once again offered to collect and deliver items of local shopping and medication for senior citizens and those of our residents who feel isolated or vulnerable during the current Level 5 restrictions, to the extent that resources allow. Garda Sergeant Dan Creedon leads the Community Liaison Team in Coolock Station. To avail of this service, contact Coolock Garda Station at 01-6664200 and they will advise of their ability to assist.
As you are aware, this year DERA had no festival events for the first time in many years because of the Covid-19 restrictions, and unfortunately this also extends to the traditional Hallowe’en fireworks display, usually organised by Dublin City Council.
All households, traders and factories in the area are asked to heed the notices given by Dublin City Council, Dublin Fire Brigade, An Garda Síochána and DERA. Do not dispose of materials of any kind that might be used in a bonfire. It is an offence to do so, and is also a major safety hazard putting lives, property and our environment at risk. In particular, please take care to secure your wheelie bins at this time.
DERA has raised complaints of anti-social behaviour in Donaghmede DCC Park with Dublin City Council and An Garda Síochána, and has requested that the matter be investigated, including the possibility of additional surveillance. Our park is one of the best local amenities which must be protected for the benefit of all.
We are aware of problems with laneways, both gated and ungated, caused by illegal dumping. In some cases we have been able to work with residents to resolve the problem, but we know much more needs to be done. We also appeal to residents not to park in or block access to laneways.
In 2021, DERA aims to celebrate the Golden Jubilee of our foundaton in 1971.
